A Gift That Says, “I Thought of You”

A Gift That Says, “I Thought of You”

THEYUNXI

Sometimes you come across an object and immediately think of someone.

Its colour reminds you of their home. Its texture makes you imagine them turning it over in their hands. You can already picture it beside the chair where they read or on the table where they have their first coffee.

For a moment, choosing feels less like searching and more like recognising.

A thoughtful gift often begins there—with something you have noticed about a person. For someone who enjoys coffee or tea, that might be a porcelain cup wrapped in handwoven bamboo.

A cup brought home from Chengdu

Mia, a softball player representing the United States at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, brought a bamboo-woven porcelain cup home for her mother.

In the feedback she shared with us, Mia recalled her mother turning the cup around in her hands. When she explained that the fine bamboo strands had been woven by hand, her mother was surprised.

A few days later, her mother told her she had been making coffee simply because she wanted to use the cup.

For someone choosing a gift, that is a lovely thing to hear. The curiosity of opening it had become the pleasure of using it. The cup had found a place in an ordinary morning.

This story of a bamboo-woven porcelain gift captures something we hope for with the Daily Cup: that its appeal continues beyond the moment it is given.

For the person you have in mind

Perhaps you know someone who notices how everyday things feel, not only how they look.

They have a favourite bowl. They pause over the texture of a fabric. When they pick up something handmade, they look a little closer, curious about how it came together.

A gift for them need not be elaborate. A familiar object with an unexpected detail may be enough to hold their attention.

On the Bamboo over Porcelain Daily Cup, that detail is the meeting of two materials. Smooth porcelain forms the interior and drinking rim. Fine bamboo weaving surrounds the body, giving the hand a different surface to explore.

From across a table, you notice the colour and shape. Up close, you can follow the individual strands and see small variations in the bamboo. The work becomes easier to appreciate when it is held.Close-up of the handwoven bamboo surface and white porcelain rim of the Natural Daily Cup on a woven coaster.

Liu Luolin and her studio contribute their knowledge of bamboo preparation, weaving, and finishing to the series. For someone interested in the people behind an object, there is a making story to discover—and something you can share when you give it.

Picture it in their day

Before choosing, imagine where the cup might go.

Beside the coffee maker they use each morning. On a desk between a notebook and a lamp. At the kitchen table, ready for tea when someone comes to sit with them.

Natural brings a lighter bamboo tone; Baked has a warmer, deeper colour. You might choose the one that feels closest to the things they already love. A single cup can be theirs alone, while the Natural + Baked Duo offers a pair to use together or share.

Think about their habits as well as their taste. The Daily Cup is handleless and needs gentle hand washing; it should not go in a dishwasher or microwave. Knowing that this suits the person is part of choosing well.

You are giving something they may live with, so the ordinary details matter.

After the wrapping is put away

Some people are careful about what they bring into their homes. Finding a gift for them can take longer, but there is particular satisfaction in seeing your choice become part of their life.

It appears beside their breakfast. They bring it out when you visit. Or they mention, almost in passing, that they have been using it.

You cannot choose someone’s favourite object for them. But you can remember what they enjoy, picture how they spend their day, and offer something that made you think of them.

Sometimes, the nicest thing to hear after giving a gift is simply, “I’ve been using it.”
