Materials & Craft

Porcelain
Fired at over 1,300°C, the white porcelain develops a dense, refined body with low water absorption and a smooth, luminous surface. Its quiet simplicity brings the color and texture of the bamboo weaving into focus, creating a balanced vessel designed for everyday tea rituals.

Bamboo
Fine bamboo strands bring warmth and texture to the clean surface of white porcelain. Woven closely around the cup, they form a natural insulating layer for a more comfortable hold. Variations in grain, color, and texture make every piece subtly unique.

Making
Each porcelain cup is wrapped and woven by hand with fine strands of bamboo. The artisan prepares each strand, works it closely around the porcelain form, and carefully conceals every join within the pattern. Subtle variations in color, tension, and weave reveal the hand behind each piece.

Materials

Two materials, one daily object.

Refined Dehua porcelain creates a smooth glazed surface for coffee and tea. Natural bamboo brings warmth, texture, and a more tactile hold.

The porcelain form and bamboo coverage are developed as one composition—not as decoration added after the fact.

Together, they turn an everyday cup into an object made to be held, used, and lived with.

Making

Two crafts. One finished form.

THE YUNXI defines the shape, proportions, capacity, finish, and bamboo coverage of the finished object.

The porcelain body is made and fired by a specialist partner in Dehua. After inspection, natural bamboo is prepared and woven around the porcelain form by hand.

The final result depends on the precision of both processes—and on how the two materials meet.

Four stages of making

01 — Defined by THE YUNXI

The shape, proportions, capacity, finish, and bamboo coverage are developed for the intended daily use.

02 — Made and fired in Dehua

The porcelain form is produced to THE YUNXI’s specifications by a specialist porcelain partner.

03 — Woven by hand

Natural bamboo is prepared and woven around each qualified porcelain form.

04 — Finished and inspected

The fit, edges, weave, porcelain surface, and overall balance are checked before packing.

Quality

Natural variation. Controlled quality.

Natural bamboo varies subtly in tone, grain, and texture. Because each exterior is woven and finished by hand, small differences in the rhythm and alignment of the weave are also part of the finished piece.

These variations make each cup individual. They do not change its intended capacity, stability, or everyday function.

What may naturally vary

  • Bamboo tone and grain
  • Subtle differences in weave alignment
  • Minor variations in hand-finished details

What we inspect

  • Secure and stable weaving
  • Smooth, comfortable edges
  • Fit between bamboo and porcelain
  • Porcelain surface and structural integrity
  • Overall balance and finish

Quality boundary

Natural variation is part of the making. Loose weaving, sharp edges, cracks, or functional defects are not.

Daily Use

Made to use. Ready to give.

Designed to move naturally between coffee and tea, each cup is made for everyday use rather than display alone.

It arrives in gift-ready presentation, carefully protected for its journey and ready to be given—or kept.

Everyday care

Hand wash gently when needed, then towel dry and allow the bamboo to dry fully.

Use it regularly. Clean it gently. Let it dry completely.

Gift-ready presentation

Each piece is inspected and securely packed before dispatch. Gift-ready presentation is included, with no additional wrapping required.

Damage-on-arrival support

If your order arrives damaged, contact us within 7 days with photographs. We will arrange a replacement or refund at no additional cost.

FAQ

What is Bamboo over Porcelain?

Bamboo over Porcelain is the meeting of two materials and two crafts: white porcelain shaped for daily drinking, held within bamboo woven by hand.

The bamboo is not simply a printed motif or decorative surface. It is prepared into fine strands and woven closely around the porcelain form, giving each object a warmer grip, visible texture, and individual character.

For THE YUNXI, Bamboo over Porcelain is not the definition of the entire brand. It is our opening material study—a first expression of how traditional making can enter contemporary daily life.

Is Bamboo over Porcelain a traditional Chinese craft?

Yes. Bamboo over Porcelain is informed by a Chinese tradition that took recognizable form in Qing-era Sichuan, where finely prepared bamboo strands were woven closely around white porcelain. A Qionglai tradition of porcelain bamboo weaving was included in China’s national intangible cultural heritage list in 2008. THE YUNXI brings this broader craft language into contemporary coffee and tea rituals.

How is the bamboo woven around the porcelain?

Each piece begins with bamboo selected for its length, flexibility, and clean natural grain.

The bamboo is split and pared into narrow strips, then carefully dried and moisture-conditioned to improve stability while preserving the flexibility needed for weaving. The prepared strips are refined into fine, even strands and sorted for tone and consistency.

Working directly around the finished porcelain form, the maker establishes the base of the weave and follows the curve of the vessel by hand. Tension must be adjusted continuously so that the bamboo sits closely against the porcelain without becoming loose or distorting the pattern.

The upper edge is then secured, loose ends are concealed, and the finished piece is inspected for fit, even tension, sharp fibers, surface irregularities, and overall stability.

Is the porcelain made by THE YUNXI?

The porcelain form is designed and specified by THE YUNXI, then produced by a specialist porcelain partner in Dehua. The bamboo weaving and final finishing are completed through a separate handcraft process.

Is every piece identical?

No two pieces are exactly alike. Slight differences in bamboo tone, grain, weave spacing, surface texture, and hand-finished dimensions are part of the character of the object.

Natural variation does not include cracks, leakage, sharp edges, structural instability, significant separation of materials, or other conditions that affect safe and intended use.

Can it be used for both coffee and tea?

Yes. The glazed porcelain interior is designed for everyday use across coffee and tea. Choose the size that best suits your preferred serving volume.

What happens if it arrives damaged?

Contact us within 7 days of delivery with photographs of the product and packaging. We will arrange a replacement or refund at no additional cost.

Does it arrive ready to give?

Yes. Gift-ready presentation is included, and each piece is protected within its shipping packaging.

Is the bamboo surface rough?

The bamboo retains a natural woven texture rather than feeling completely smooth. The edges, joints, and areas that come into contact with the hand are finished and inspected to reduce roughness or sharp fibers.

Minor differences in texture are natural. Sharp edges, prominent splinters, or loose weaving are not considered normal variation.

Does the bamboo provide insulation?

Yes. The handwoven bamboo forms a natural insulating layer between the heated porcelain and the hand. It reduces direct heat transfer through the covered areas, making hot coffee or tea more comfortable to hold while preserving the smooth porcelain drinking surface.

As temperatures vary between drinks, freshly poured hot liquids should still be handled with care.

How does the cup feel in the hand?

The handwoven bamboo creates a warm, lightly textured surface that feels more tactile than exposed glazed porcelain. Its coverage is positioned around the areas most naturally touched when lifting and holding the cup.

Because the bamboo is woven by hand, subtle differences in texture are natural. The edges and contact points are inspected for a smooth, comfortable finish.

How does the rim feel when drinking?

The drinking rim remains uncovered porcelain, creating a smooth glazed contact surface without bamboo touching the lips.

The rim of the cup balances drinking comfort, durability and daily usability.

Are all cups exactly the same?

The shape, capacity, and functional standards are controlled. Natural differences in bamboo tone, grain, and handweaving mean that no two finished pieces will appear completely identical.

Is it dishwasher or microwave safe?

No. Hand washing protects the natural bamboo and helps preserve the finished piece. Dry the bamboo fully after cleaning.

Will the bamboo become loose over time?

The fine bamboo strands are fitted and woven closely around the porcelain form, creating a lightweight insulating layer that is both decorative and practical. Under normal dry use, the prepared bamboo is designed to maintain its shape and close fit around the porcelain. Each finished piece is inspected for weave tension, fit, and stability before packing.

As a natural material, bamboo may respond to prolonged moisture, soaking, or improper drying.

To preserve the fit, do not soak the cup and allow the bamboo to dry fully after cleaning.

What does sustainability mean to THE YUNXI?

We treat sustainability as an ongoing practice rather than a label.

Our objects are made in small batches to reduce unnecessary inventory and are designed to be used repeatedly over time. We use natural bamboo for its tactile and functional qualities, and we aim to keep packaging to what is necessary for the safe delivery of a fragile object.

We are continuing to verify material sourcing, packaging, and fulfillment practices before making broader environmental claims. We prefer specific, accountable improvements over describing an object simply as “eco-friendly.”
