Two materials. One form.

Materials

Dehua porcelain gives the cup its refined form, smooth glazed interior, and drinking rim. Fine bamboo is woven by hand around the exterior, adding warmth, texture, and a thermal buffer where the hand naturally holds the cup.

The contrast is both visible and felt: clear porcelain at the lips, tactile bamboo in the hand.

Making & Quality

THE YUNXI defines the cup’s form, proportions, capacity, finish, and bamboo coverage. Porcelain bodies are made in small batches by a specialist partner in Dehua. After an order is placed, fine bamboo is woven and finished by hand around each completed porcelain form in Chengdu.

Before packing, every cup is inspected for the fit between bamboo and porcelain, secure weaving, comfortable edges, porcelain condition, and overall balance. Subtle variations in bamboo tone, grain, and weave belong to the handwork; loose weaving, sharp edges, cracks, and functional faults do not.

LIVED WITH OVER TIME

Made to become yours

At first, the hand meets the fine, distinct texture of the bamboo weave. With repeated lifting and holding, the woven surface becomes increasingly familiar. The porcelain keeps its form; the bamboo carries the subtle traces of touch and time. It is not simply an object that grows older, but one gradually lived with and made personal through everyday use.

GIFTING

A gift that continues

Chosen as a single cup or as the Natural + Baked Duo, it is presented with care for giving.

The cup is made not only for the moment it is opened, but for the coffee, tea, and everyday rituals that follow.

FAQ

What exactly is Bamboo over Porcelain?

Bamboo over Porcelain brings glazed porcelain together with fine bamboo woven directly around its exterior. The bamboo is a physical woven layer—not a printed pattern or removable sleeve—while the drinking rim and interior remain uncovered porcelain.

Does Bamboo over Porcelain come from a traditional craft?

Yes. Porcelain-body bamboo weaving, known in China as citai zhubian (瓷胎竹编), developed in Sichuan during the Qing dynasty from an older practice of wrapping functional vessels in finely prepared bamboo. Over generations, it became closely associated with porcelain tea ware.

THE YUNXI carries this craft language into a contemporary Daily Cup designed around today’s coffee routines, while remaining equally at home with tea.

How is the bamboo woven around the porcelain?

The bamboo exterior is woven entirely by hand. Fine strands are worked directly around each finished porcelain form, with spacing, direction, and tension adjusted as the weave follows the cup. The edges and joins are then completed and inspected by hand.

Every artisan who weaves the Daily Cup has at least five years of bamboo-weaving experience.

What is the difference between Natural, Baked, and Duo?

Natural has a lighter bamboo tone, while Baked has a warmer, deeper tone. Both use the same porcelain form, capacity, and weaving structure. The Duo includes one cup in each finish.

Will my cup look exactly like the photographs?

Each cup follows the same intended form and quality standard, while subtle differences in bamboo tone, grain, and weave rhythm may remain visible. Sharp contact edges, loose or unstable weaving, and faults affecting normal use are not considered natural variation.

What does the bamboo change in use?

The handwoven bamboo adds a warm, lightly textured surface where the cup is naturally held. It also forms a thermal buffer across the covered areas, reducing the direct heat felt through bare porcelain and making hot drinks more comfortable to hold.

The drinking rim remains uncovered, preserving a smooth glazed porcelain surface at the lips. The bamboo is not completely heatproof, so freshly poured drinks should still be handled with care.

How will the bamboo change over time, and how should I care for it?

With regular use, the bamboo may gradually deepen in color and develop a soft, natural sheen, especially in the areas you hold most often. This is a normal patina—the subtle change that comes from repeated handling—not a defect or something that needs to be scrubbed away. Over time, the cup may feel more familiar in your hand and more distinctly yours.

Routine care remains simple. Hand-wash the cup with a soft sponge and mild dish soap; do not soak it. Towel-dry it, then let the bamboo air-dry completely before storing. Do not put it in the dishwasher or microwave.

What if something does not feel right when it arrives?

Loose or unstable weaving, sharp contact edges, cracked or chipped porcelain, serious instability, or an incorrect item are not part of normal handmade variation. Contact support@theyunxi.com within seven days of delivery with your order number and clear photographs. Once confirmed, we will arrange an appropriate replacement or refund at no additional cost.

What does sustainability mean to THE YUNXI?

We treat sustainability as an ongoing practice rather than a label.

Our objects are made in small batches to reduce unnecessary inventory and are designed to be used repeatedly over time. We use natural bamboo for its tactile and functional qualities, and we aim to keep packaging to what is necessary for the safe delivery of a fragile object.

We are continuing to verify material sourcing, packaging, and fulfillment practices before making broader environmental claims. We prefer specific, accountable improvements over describing an object simply as “eco-friendly.”
